SPIRIT OF ECSTASY

"The Flying Lady"

The Spirit of Ecstasy is one of the most well known motor car mascot in the world. Designed by Charles Robinson Sykes, The Spirit of Ecstasy has adorned the radiators of Rolls-Royce motor cars since 1911. This wonderful mascot was modeled after a young woman who had bewitching beauty, intellect and esprit - but not the social status which might have permitted her to marry the man with whom she had fallen in love.

The model was Eleanor Velasco Thornton, whose relationship with John Walter Edward-Scott-Montagu remained a secret for over a decade, principally because both lovers acted with the utmost discretion. John Scott, heir to his father's title, was a pioneer of the automobile in England. From 1902 he was editor of the "The Car". Eleanor Thornton served as his secretary. Friends of the pair knew of their close relationship but they were sufficiently understanding as to overlook it.

A member of this circle of friends was the sculptor Charles S Sykes. Lord Montagu ordered t he creation of a special mascot for his Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The small statue depicted a young woman in fluttering robes having placed one forefinger to her lips. The sculptor had chosen Eleanor Thornton as model for this figurine, which was christened "The Whisper".

Lord Montagu had made the decision to put a mascot on top of the radiator, and it had become a fashion. Rolls-Royce had noted other owners of their cars following the new vogue, but doing so with questionable style by choosing mundane or even risqué and vulgar subjects.

Following Lord Montagu's commission, Charles Sykes was asked to create a mascot which in future would adorn every Rolls-Royce. In February 1911 he presented the "Spirit of Ecstasy", which was easily recognizable as being a variation on the theme of "The Whisper". The similarity was hardly coincidental because the model for both had been Miss Thornton.

The Spirit of Ecstasy was delivered by the Company with every Rolls-Royce. Each was done using the technique which was thousands of years old and known as the lost-wax method. This practice results in the mould's being destroyed to reveal the casting, which explains why no two figures are exactly alike. Sykes, assisted by his daughter Jo, remained responsible for manufacturing the Spirit of Ecstasy for many years. Likewise, each of the unique creations bore his signature on the plinth. The sculptures are either signed "Charles Sykes, February 1911" or sometimes "Feb 6, 1911" or "6.2.11". Even after Rolls-Royce took over the casting of the figures in 1948 each Spirit of Ecstasy continued to receive this inscription until 1951.

From 1911 to 1914 the Spirit of Ecstasy was silver-plated and thus many thought it a massive piece of precious metal - one reason for the frequent thefts. In smaller versions, and now made from highly polished nickel alloy, the radiator decoration has stood its ground on every Rolls-Royce, including those in the present range.

Over the years various alterations have been made. Those mascots for Rolls-Royce motor cars at the Springfield plant in the USA were modified. Bowing a little more forward no longer were they a danger to the bonnet. The original version had touched the bonnet sides when these were opened without the precaution having been taken of turning the figure sideways.

Royce did not like the Spirit of Ecstasy, which he judged her to be just a fashionable bauble and complained that she spoiled the clear line of the car's bow. The order to create the sculpture was given during the chief engineer's illness and had been absent. Thus it became a habit that Rolls-Royce cars used by Royce were rarely driven with a mascot in place.

Towards the end of the twenties the new body line of Sports Saloons had reduced the height of the coachwork. Royce was prompted to think about a lower variation of the Spirit of Ecstasy, by which alteration a driver might benefit from clear vision even with the windscreen lower and his seating position reduced in turn. Sykes created a kneeling version of the mascot, which fulfilled this requirement.

The kneeling version remained after the Second World War for the new Silver Wraith and Silver Dawn. All following models, however, sported a standing mascot, although this has now been reduced in size considerably compared to the old one.

Rarely, however, is the correct term "Spirit of Ecstasy" used - detractors remark this was only done at the factory in Crewe. The nickname "Emily" is widespread and Americans speak of the "Silver Lady" or the "Flying Lady".

In 1920 Rolls-Royce had taken part in a competition in Paris for the most apposite mascot in the world. This they did with a gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy, which secured Rolls-Royce first place. From then on gold-plated versions of the Spirit of Ecstasy were available from the company - at an extra charge.

Safety regulations in some countries turned out to be a stumbling block to the fitting of the Spirit of Ecstasy. She qualified as a sharp-edged piece of metal jutting from the coachwork, which might injure a victim in an accident. because of this, in Switzerland during the second half of the seventies, the installation of mascots on Rolls-Royces was forbidden and purchasers of a new Rolls-Royce delivered to that country found their mascot in the glove compartment. The problem was solved with the Silver Spirit and Silver Spur; at the merest knock the Spirit of Ecstasy sank into the radiator surround and vanished out of harms way. Thus were the safety regulations satisfied.

The woman who had been the model for the radiator decoration, was not to appreciate its success. Eleanor Thornton lost her life when, on 30 December 1915, on the SS Persia, while on passage to India, was torpedoed off Crete by a German submarine. She had been accompanying Lord Montagu who had been directed to take over a command in India. He was thought to have been killed, too, but survived and was rescued a few days later by another ship. On his return to England he read the obituary articles in the newspapers about his own demise.

Variously called the Texan (USAAF), Harvard (RAF), Yale, I-Bird, Mosquito, Wirraway (Australia), T-6 and SNJ (USN), the AT-6 appeared in 1940, a derivation of North American's NA-16 design drawn up for the 1937 Air Corp competition (which was won by the NA-16 incidentally). In all, over 17,000 aircraft were produced, not taking into account the numbers rebuilt from existing airframes, or others that used the AT-6 technology, such as the P-64 or Boomerang.

The AT-6 Texan became the classroom for the majority of the Allied pilots who flew in World War II, and trained several hundred thousand pilots in 34 different countries. It's basic design was as a trainer, with the characteristics of a high speed fighter, and was well suited to the intermediary task of training pilots before letting them loose in an actual fighter aircraft. Although not as fast as a fighter, it was easy to maintain and repair, had more maneuverability and was easier to handle. A pilot's airplane, it could roll, Immelmann, loop, spin, snap, and vertical roll. It was used to train pilots in all aspects of tactical operations, such as dog-fighting, ground strafing, carrier landings, and bombardment. It also included the capacity for fixed and flexible guns, cameras, and just about any other device that the military required.

The Texan is best known as a trainer, and is affectionately know as 'PILOT MAKER'. In the words of one airman ''The best machine ever built to turn gasoline into noise'.

The Iron Eagle Aerobatic Team fly two Super Christen Eagle I Aircraft. They are powered by a highly modified engine producing 320 hp. The aircraft originally came equipped with a 200 hp Lycoming engine, and equipped with 2 seats. The aircraft over a 3 year period were transformed from a sport aerobatic aircraft into one of only 4 single seat Eagles flying in the country today. The front seat was replaced with a 30 gallon Aerobatic fuel tank along with a 25 gallon auxiliary tank and a 11 gallon smoke tank in which they can also run fuel for long extended cross country flights. They can travel up to 750 miles before needing any fuel. The planes cruising speed at 50% power is 200 mph.

Last week - when dad was still in the hospital, my sister and her husband and Debbie stopped on the way to dinner to get this shot. It's a little surreal as well - and I know you can read anything into anything. But this death thing is an odyssey to me - as I thankfully haven't seen that much in my life.

But from a Christian point of view...

It is a strange lead engine with Road markings that don't belong on a Union Pacific train. - Like an outsider who has come for one purpose. (as in the Dark Stranger in Rendezvous in Samara)

Missouri Pacific RR was bought out by Union Pacific. MOPAC was dad's last railroad job. This is on the Union Pacific tracks once owned by MOPAC

It is covered in blood red on the front - covering the blackness that lie beneath and behind. Somewhat like the blood of the Lamb that covers our sins.

It is pulling out of Enid station - not into it.

The train is leaving the station - much like Dad was leaving the building.

It is leaving the dark side of the picture and heading toward the light side.

There is no visible engineer.

A funny co-incidence, Someone arranged for an unusual escort. Dad was buried in a small cemetery outside of Carrier, Oklahoma. As we sat facing the casket at the grave side - you could see in the distance a railroad line about a 1/4 mile away.

Dad had at one time worked for the railroads before he took a job at Boeing and we lived in Wichita about the same distance away from the Santa Fe rail line for a while when I was a kid.

Just as the Coast Guard Color Guards were preparing to fold the flag and with the first note of Taps played by the Bugler - a BNSF train started blowing its horn as it approached the crossing - on key - with the bugler and blew the whole time it was being played. So, during the playing of Taps, that train went by in the distance back of the casket - between the top of the casket and the bottom of the flag as they held it. I took the opportunity to lean over to my sister and whisper: "you know BNSF is the same as the Santa Fe that ran past our house in Wichita". Had we been about 2 inches shorter, it would have looked like the train ran from left to right - head to toe, across the top of the casket.

It was surreal in a way - and to be honest, i wished i had my camera in hand at that moment.

As the last car of the train finally went by the end of the casket, the Color Guard knelt down and handed me the flag and said something about how the President and a grateful nation thanked us for my dad's service to this country during WWII.

And that was it. We stood alone in the Oklahoma morning, the wind blew as it does in those parts, the sun shown and we walked away knowing for the rest of us, life goes on.

The Byodo-In Temple was built in the 1960's to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant workers in Hawaii who came to work in the sugar plantation fields. It is a replica of the 950-year-old Byodoin Temple located in Uji, Japan on the southern outskirts of Kyoto.

The Keeper of the Plains is a 44-foot tall steel sculpture standing at the point where the Big and Little Arkansas rivers join together in downtown Wichita. This land between the two rivers is sacred ground to the Native American people and is also home to the All-American Indian Center. The Indian Warrior sculpture was created by Wichitan and Native American artist Blackbear Bosin (1921-1980). This icon of Wichita was erected on May 18, 1974 to celebrate the United States Bi-centenial and has kept a watchful eye on the city ever since.

Decades later the Keeper of the Plains now has an even larger view of Wichita. A complete renovation of the sculpture and instalation of the Keeper of the Plains Plaza now brings people out each evening to see the Keeper and the "Ring of Fire" starting at dusk and the top of each hour for 15 minutes. The 5-ton Keeper of the Plains statue is now 30 feet higher than before with it's new pedestal. There are also two suspended foot bridges allowing people to cross from the north and south directions to the plaza at the base of the Keeper. Part of the $20 million dollar river corridor improvement project, the statue can now be seen over the trees and buildings that have sprung up over the years along the river.

As the story goes... one hot summer day, after many days of drought, a man took off all his clothes and preceded to do a rain dance right there under the statue. In plain site of many cars passing by on McLean Avenue, the police were called and just as it started to sprinkle, the man was arrested and hauled off to jail. The rain stopped and didn't begin again for over two weeks.

"The squadron's Transport C-130 hercules aircraft, affectionately known as Fat Albert, is the only Marine Corps aircraft permanently assigned to support a Navy squadron. It is flown by an all-Marine Corps crew of three pilots and five enlisted personnel. Fat Albert flies more than 140,000 miles during the course of a show season.

The C-130 carries 25,000 pounds of cargo, 45,000 pounds of fuel, and transports the squadron's support and maintenance crew to each show site.

Fat Albert cruises at 320 knots (approximately 350 miles per hour) at 27,000 feet. Four Allison turboprop-engines producing more than 16,000-shaft horsepower provide the C-130 with the power to land and depart on runways as short as 2,500 feet.

At select show sites, Fat Albert demonstrates its Jet-Assisted Take-Off (JATO) capability. Eight solid-fuel rockets are attached to the sides of the aircraft, four on each side. The rockets allow Fat Albert to take off within 1,500 feet, climb at a 45-degree angle, and attain an altitude of 1,500 feet in seconds."
